Types of radios
What is a radio?
It is a machine that sends electromagnetic signals over a long distance to deliver information from one place to another. Serbian-American scientist Nikola Tesla and Italian physicist Guglielmo Marconi made experiments that became the basis of the invention of the modern day radio. Other scientists are credited such as Alexander Popov, Reginald Fessenden and William Dubilier in the history of making a radio.

In 1895, Guglielmo Marconi sent and received his first radio signal in Italy. Radios help in socializing people, communicating important information, education, entertainment and other purposes. Today we are going to learn about the different types of radios including:
AM and FM
Shortwave Radio
Satellite Radio
Ham Radio
Walkie-Talkie

AM and FM radio: This is a radio that uses two different types of amplitudes to broadcast waves including Amplitude modulation and Frequency modulation. Frequency modulation broadcasting or FM is the encoding of information in a carrier wave by varying the instantaneous frequency of the wave while Amplitude modulation broadcasting or AM, the amplitude of the carrier wave is modulated to encode the original sound.

Fessenden invented the way to modulate the amplitude (Amplitude is the distance from " peak" to "trough") of radio waves. A microphone was used to convert ordinary sound into an electric signal which was superimposed on the continuous radio waves.

KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in October 1920 received its license as a commercial broadcasting station and in November 2nd 1920, it broadcasted the US presidential elections as its inaugural show.

Shortwave Radio: This is a radio that uses  transmissions of shortwave radio frequencies. It has no definition of the band but it ranges with high frequency band and basically extends from 3–30 MHz above the medium frequency band, to the end of the HF band.

Guglielmo Marconi's for two decades, he continued refining his inventions, experimenting with shortwave broadcasts and testing transmission distances aboard his 700-ton yacht, Elettra. In September 1924, Marconi transmitted waves daytime and nighttime on 32 meters (9.4 MHz) from Poldhu to his yacht in Beirut.

Satellite Radio: This is a digital broadcast which transmits signals over long distances and large areas with greater clarity and consistency than conventional radio. It works by transmitting its signal from a ground based station to one or more satellites orbiting the earth.

The first artificial satellite was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957 under the Sputnik program, with Sergei Korolev as chief designer

Ham Radio or amateur: This is the use of radios that brings people, communication and electronics together. People use ham radio to talk over vast distances and continents. It is used for educational, social and entertainment purposes. Guglielmo Marconi invented the ham radio  in the 1980s when he captured radio waves proven to exist by Heinrich Rudolf Hertz in 1888.

Walkie-Talkie: This is a portable handheld transceiver or HT which sends and receives radio waves usually in short range distances.  It was invented by Donald L. Hings, radio engineer Alfred J. Gross, Henryk Magnuski and engineering teams at Motorola during the second world War.
