Types of televisions

What is a television?

This is a system designed to convert visual images with sound into electronic by signals transmitting them by radio or any other means and displaying them electronically on the screen. Filo Taylor Farnsworth invented the first television at the age of 21 years in 1927. He lived in a house without electricity until the age of 14 years old.

Televisions today are used to broadcast programmes for entertainment, information and education purposes.Today, we are going to learn about the different types of televisions including:

1.Direct View televisions

2.Plasma Display Panels

3.Digital Light Processing (DLP)

4.Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)

5.Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) Display

6.Quantum Light-Emitting Diode (QLED)

1.Direct View televisions: This is a type of television that uses CRT and a scanning electronic gun to paint an image on a phosphor coated screen. The world's first direct view television was the TV8-301 8-inch portable transistor TV by Sony in 1959 by Masaru Ibuka and made available for sell in 1960.

2.Plasma Display panel (PDP) television is a type that uses a panel display which uses small cells containing Plasma: ionized gas that responds to electric fields. In 1964, the first flat plasma display panel (PDP) was invented by Donald Bitzer, Gene Slottow and Robert Willson. Plasma displays were first used in PLATO computer terminals.

3.Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a set of chipsets based on optical micro-electro-mechanical technology that use a digital micromirror device. The DLP technology is used in DLP front projectors (standalone projection units for classrooms and business primarily), DLP rear projection television sets, and digital signs. Hideo Kodama of Nagoya Municipal Industrial Research Institute made the first 3D printed solid model in 1981 using photoplymer technology.

4.Liquid Crystal Display (LCD): This is a flat panel or electronically modulated electric device that uses light-modulating properties of liquid crystals combined with polarizers. George H. Heilmeier, an electrical engineer in the 1960s helped invent a screen display that used liquid crystals to project images. In 1973, Brody, J. A. Asars and G. D. Dixon at Westinghouse Research Laboratories demonstrated the first thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT LCD).

5.Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) Display: These television use a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current. The film is what displays the television images. André Bernanose and co-workers at the Nancy-Université university of France in the 1950s and Martin Pope and co-workers at New York University in the 1960s are the founders on modern OLED devices.

6.Quantum Light-Emitting Diode (QLED) televisions: These are televisions with the latest screens. They have bright, intense colors they produce using quantum dot technology. Conventional QLEDs consist of a multitude of spherical semiconductor nanocrystals, known as quantum dots. This technology was discovered in the 1950s.
