Groups of dogs
A dog is a domestic carnivorous mammal that basically has a long snout and an acute sense of smell. Dogs fall under a species called C. Lupus. It is believed that the first domesticated dogs where wolves domesticated 15,000 years ago in the middle east. Wolves where tamed for their hunting skills and breed creating hundred of different breeds



Dog have different uses such as in combat to detect bombs, therapy, herding livestock, sheep and other animals, acting movies etc. Today we are going to learn about the seven different groups of dogs. 


Herding dogs, stock dog, Shepard dog, working dog: is a dog trained in herding other animals. Herding dogs where first used by sheep herders in the 1570s. Some of the herding breeds include Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Kelpie, Australian Shepherd, Altdeutsche Hütehunde and many others, these breeds are strong and intelligent that's where they got their name as shepherd dogs, their trainers give them regular exercises and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. The herding dogs have learnt to herd livestock and push them towards the direction of where they want which makes them the better option over other groups of dogs.

Sporting dogs: These are the types of dogs grown for hunting. They were bred from English Foxhounds, red Irish Hounds, French Hounds, and German Brindle Schweisshunds. The first night hunt trial of this type of dog is 1924. They are given direction by pointing, flushing, retrieving game. Examples include pointer, English springer spaniel, Labrador retriever, English cocker spaniel and many other. They are used by hunters to locate, flush and retrieve game from land and water

Golden Retriever
German Shorthaired Pointer


Non sporting dogs: These types of dogs are breed as pets. They come from sporting dogs and are not for sporting purposes. Some of the examples include Bichon Frise, bulldog, dalmatian etc. These dogs do not share any characteristics and do not fit in any groups. There are over 20 breeds non sporting dogs and come in different sizes, shapes and colors. They are used for companion purposes.

Working dogs: These are the types of dogs breed to perform practical tasks. In Germany 1916, German shepherds where trained to serve as guides. They were used as messengers, scouts and boost the morale of soldiers in world War I and II. Some of the working dogs include boxer, great Dane, Siberia husky, doberman and many other breeds. They tend to be small or mid size in stature. They have patchwork hair of different colors that appear motley and slightly disheveled. Working dogs are usually used in the military as detectors, trackers, sentries, scouts and search for rescue.

Doberman and German Pinscher 


Hounds: These are dogs which usually use their sense of smell to track and chase pray. In 10,000BC North Africa, nomadic people teamed with Hounds to hunt for bovine that roamed within the wild herds. Some of the examples include bloodhound, basset hound, beagle and others. These dogs are agile and fast and use most of their sense of smell to track down what they look for. They usually have large noses that have deep open nostrils. Their lips are loose and most designed to pick up scent particles and follow trail.

Terriers: These are dogs breed to hunt vermin and are usually found in England. They are typically small, wiry, game and fearless. They vary in weights of 1kg to 32kg. Examples include Jack Russell Terrier, bull terrier, yorkshire terrier, rat terrier and many other breeds. They are usually brave, agile, active and playful dogs. The AKC lists 30 types of Terriers. They are also used in sports for foxhunting and dog fighting. They were originally bred to fight and kill but now are bred for a friendly temperament.

West Highland White Terrier
Scottish Terrier


Toy breeds: These are usually small in size and are curious, amusing and loyal. They are breed to be small, portable and good natured dogs. Joe Markham is known to have breed the  toy dog as a police trained police dog. Examples of toy dogs include poodle, pomeranian, Chihuahua, Maltese and other breeds. They usually have fluffy far, floppy ear and curly tails and mat weigh less than 22 lbs and are a shorter than 16 inches. Toy dogs offer mental and physical stimulation. Their size is good to be kept by those with small space and can also be controlled by giving them toys to play with.
