What is hip hop music? 
Hip hop music or rap music is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner city African American and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York in the 1970's. Anthony "DJ Hollywood" Holloway is credited to be the founder of rap music from Harlem, New York. It began at block parties in New York City in the 1970's when Djs began isolating the percussion breaks of funk, soul and disco songs and extending them.


The first hiphop song was "Rappers delight" by a hiphop group called "The Sugar Hill Gang" and the term hip hop is credited to the rapper Keith Cowboy with master flash and the furious five. Keith Cowboy, Lovebug Starski and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap. Today we are going to learn about the different types of hiphop music including:

1.Old school rap: This is the old commercially recorded hiphop music created around 1979 and 1983 from The Bronx in New York City. It typically uses guitars, drums and a bass. The MCs and Djs including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow and the Cold Crush Brothers, Grandmaster Caz are considered to be the founders of old school hiphop music. 2.Christian hiphop/ gospel rap/ Christian rap, gospel hiphop/ holy hiphop is a subgenre of hiphop music characterized by Christian wide view with the purpose of evangelization discovered in the 1980s. The instruments used include Turntables, vocals, samplers, synthesizers, drum machines and pianos. Christian hiphop was first released by Stephen Wiley in 1985. 3.Jazz rap or jazz hop: This is a genre of hiphop mixed with jazz developed in the 1980s and 1990s. It comes from Nu jazz and trip hop. It was formed by bands including A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Jungle Brothers, and Dream Warriors. 4.Crunk hiphop: This is a genre of hiphop that was derived from jersey club and trap in the 1990s and gained mainstream success in the mid 2000s in Memphis, Tennessee. It possibly came from the rowdy out of control behavior by a crowd at southern night clubs. The term Crunk actually means crazy and drunk. Outkast a hiphop duo was the first artist to use the term in  music in a 1993 music track called players ball. Some of the popular crank hiphop artists are Lil Jon, Soulja boy, T Pain. 


5.Dirty South Hiphop/ Southern rap/ South coast Hiphop/ dirty south: This is music that came from the Southern and South Eastern United States from states such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, Memphis and Miami. Southern hiphop originated from the Getto Boys from songs like Grip it! On that other level, in 1989, Rick Rubin 1990, We can't be stopped in 1991. 6.East coast Hiphop music: This is a subgenre of hiphop music that originated from Bronx, New York Music in the 1970's. It originates from hiphop, dance hall, toasting and other genres instruments such as drum machines, synthesizers, music sequencer, Turntables etc. It has a prioritized lyrics for attentive listening rather than the beats for listening. Nas, Notorious B.I.G, and other rappers are some of the first rappers to release East Coast Hiphop music. Nas' album illmatic is one of the most creative high points in the East Coast Hiphop scene. 7.Freestyle rap: This is a style of improvisation with or without instrumental beats. It like a capella type of hip hop in which a lyrics is recited without a particular subject or structure. Freestyle music developed in the 1980s in the Hispanic (Puerto Rican) communities of Upper Manhattan,the Bronx, Italian American communities in Brooklyn and other places. Instruments such as synthesizers, drum machines are basically used. It comes from genres such as Breakbeat and Funk Carioca. 8.Gangsta rap/ Gangsta hiphop: This is a genre of hiphop where the lyrics and themes of the song emphasize on Gang star life or thug life style. It is derived from mafioso rap., Ice-T released the first Gangsta rap song called 6 in the morning which became popular in the mid 1980s and later Easy-E who performed solo and belong to a hiphop group called N.W.A Wright, is called the GodFather of Gangsta hiphop music in 1986. 9.Hardcore hiphop: This is a genre of hiphop music that developed from the East Coast scene in 1980s. It is derived from Gangsta rap, horror ore rap, mafioso rap and dirty rap. Music experts credited Run-DMC as the first hardcore hiphop group. Other early artists to adopt the hardcore hiphop include Schoolly D in Philadelphia and too short in Oakland. 10.West coast rap or West Coast Hiphop: West coast Hiphop is a music genre of hiphop that comes from the United States regions of the west coast. It came from the Djing than from rapping. It is derived from Jerkin, G funk and Hyphy.  Duffy Hooks released the first West coast label called Rappers Rapp Records inspired by Sugar Hill records in New York. According to m.ranker.com, some of the best West Coast rappers include Tupac Shakur, N.W.A, Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube.
