What is hip hop music?
Hip hop music or rap music is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner city African American and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York in the 1970's. Anthony "DJ Hollywood" Holloway is credited to be the founder of rap music from Harlem, New York. It began at block parties in New York City in the 1970's when Djs began isolating the percussion breaks of funk, soul and disco songs and extending them.
The first hiphop song was "Rappers delight" by a hiphop group called "The Sugar Hill Gang" and the term hip hop is credited to the rapper Keith Cowboy with master flash and the furious five. Keith Cowboy, Lovebug Starski and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was still known as disco rap. Today we are going to learn about the different types of hiphop music including:

1.Old school rap: This is the old commercially recorded hiphop music created around 1979 and 1983 from The Bronx in New York City. It typically uses guitars, drums and a bass. The MCs and Djs including Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kurtis Blow and the Cold Crush Brothers, Grandmaster Caz are considered to be the founders of old school hiphop music. 2.Christian hiphop/ gospel rap/ Christian rap, gospel hiphop/ holy hiphop is a subgenre of hiphop music characterized by Christian wide view with the purpose of evangelization discovered in the 1980s. The instruments used include Turntables, vocals, samplers, synthesizers, drum machines and pianos. Christian hiphop was first released by Stephen Wiley in 1985. 5.Dirty South Hiphop/ Southern rap/ South coast Hiphop/ dirty south: This is music that came from the Southern and South Eastern United States from states such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Houston, Memphis and Miami. Southern hiphop originated from the Getto Boys from songs like Grip it! On that other level, in 1989, Rick Rubin 1990, We can't be stopped in 1991.
